Inspired by the swimming pool series by the British artist David Hockney, I created this painting.
You see a girl in a bathing suit at the edge of a swimming pool; She stands there all alone and you see her doubting; She wants to dive into the water, but there is a writing on the wall. Please don't jump, it says in red letters. The girl is unsure whether she will follow the request not to jump. Yet she is already bent over slightly, ready to jump into the cooling water.
This painting seems like an innocent everyday scene, but I want to express something deeper.
The swimming pool has a ripple-free water surface that symbolizes life in a carefree society. The girl is on the brink of this life. She knows that if she jumps there will be waves in this life and the text next to hate contains a warning. Don't do it, the text says. The girl does not know what the consequences will be if she jumps into life recklessly. She hesitates. Will she obediently follow the advice and face a safe and boring future, or will she jump?
This is the question we all ask ourselves sometimes.
Do I do it or don't I do it?
